Hermanus bypass comments due

The CBD bypass road in Hermanus is in the limelight. The draft Environmental Impact Assessment report has been finished. And it’s now ready to be commented on. Comments need to be in by 3 July.

The bypass road cuts through Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The bypass will run through Overberg Sandstone Fynbos, at the ecotone with Hangklip Sand Fynbos and Agulhas Limestone Fynbos. The mountainous areas is also home to critically endangered mountain fynbos.

According to the report, “The FNR (Fernkloof Nature Reserve) also provides pristine and varied habitat for many animal species.”

The SA National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) has also labelled the the area north of Mountain Drive a Critical Biodiversity Area, while a wetland adjacent to the Hermanus Golf Course is an Ecological Support Area.

According to the draft EIA, the bypass will result in “unavoidable adverse environmental impacts”.
