Challenges in invasive alien plant control

It is estimated that R6.5-billion is lost every year as a result of invading alien plants. But without alien clearing programmes, such as Working for Water, that would amount to an additional R41.7-billion. The Working for Water programme strives to control invasive alien species in South Africa.

At the Fynbos Forum, held earlier this year, problems facing this government programme were highlighted, and possible ways for the scientific community to assist the programme were assessed. A number of suggestions were made to increase the effectiveness of Working for Water, and these have now been captured in a report compiled from discussions at the Forum.
