Overberg's high-risk fire areas identified
The Bredasdorp Napier mountain range has been identified as a high risk area for fire during the 2013/2014 fire season. That's according to the Overberg District Municipality in its assessment of its fire season readiness.
The document also highlights Sandy's Glen Salmonsdam, Suiderstrand and Agulhas, and Elim and Viljoenshof as risky areas in the Overberg. The municipality plans to address the threats through fire detection patrols by fixed wing aircraft, and static lookouts during high-risk days.
Through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Fynbos Fire Project, the region now has access to a satellite early detection (AFIS) system, a tool that provides real-time fire information. Along with a database of properties in the municipal area, it's hoped fire rescue officials will be able to respond to threats, even before owners report them. Daily weather updates will also improve readiness.
According to the document, a helicopter, spotter aircraft and bombers will be based in Bredasdorp, while fire-fighting teams will be stationed across the Overberg.
Emphasis has also been placed on Fire Protection Associations (FPAs) to ensure they are prepared for fires.
