Fire prevention policies to be updated

An indaba to assess the current state of fire prevention in South Africa will be held in Cape Town in October. The Pro-active Fire Services Indaba will also examine policy issues on fire prevention, protection and safety to be included in the White Paper on Fire Brigade Services.

The Fire Brigade Services Act is currently under review, with the discussion paper published in March this year. According to this document, the legislation must focus more on fire prevention if fire services wish to be more effective. The legislation would also need to take new threats into consideration, including global warming and climate change.

The Pro-active Fire Services Indaba is likely to be one of the last opportunities to bring about changes to the fire services legislation regarding fire prevention, fire safety and fire protection.

It is being organised by the Directorate: Fire Services Coordination, located in the National Disaster Management Centre.

The Indaba takes place between 23 to 25 October, at the Southern Sun in Cape Town. Interested parties can attend. For more information, contact: or
