CONSERVATION NEWS IN THE OVERBERG

Overberg Open Training Day held

Conservancy members in the Overberg are invited to attend an Overberg Open Training Day, organised by Conservation at Work. The training day will cover subjects such as erosion control, managing fynbos veld fires, and snake awareness.

Preparing for the ABI Alien Clearing Project’s third year

The ABI Alien Clearing Project partners – including landowners and alien clearing contractors – celebrated the end of the second year of the project on Wednesday 19 March. Through the project, around 30,000 hectares have been cleared on the Agulhas Plain in year two, and around 250 jobs have been created.

Taking nature education to our children

Environmental education in the Overberg received a boost – thanks to the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative (ABI) Small Grants Programme. Environmental education coordinator, Gretha Louw – who received support from ABI through its Small Grants Facility – has used the funding to acquire a digital microscope and other gadgets, used to teach children about nature and sustainable life on earth.

ABI presents at DEA planning session

The ABI team presented the ABI Alien Clearing Project to the Department of Environmental Affairs and independent researchers at the Department’s Management, Research and Planning meeting (MAREP) in November. The three-day conference sought to develop closer ties between research planning and implementation, with much emphasis placed on invasive alien clearing.
