Bringing about a better Overberg: The WWF Nedbank Green Trust’s work
The WWF Nedbank Green Trust is 30 years old this year.
The Trust works through partnerships. But not just any partnerships. They focus on those who protect South Africa’ s natural resources, and who can bring about change beyond their immediate footprint – for a better Overberg (and South Africa).

One of these partners is the Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative. The WWF Nedbank Green Trust is funding ABI’s revisioning process, to set ABI on a new trajectory over the next 10 years.
The Trust has also funded over 200 other major conservation projects, raising more than R300-million to support these projects since 1990.
Because of this, the WWF Nedbank Green Trust is our featured ABI Partner.
We spoke to the Trust’s Nomonde Mxhalisa to find out more on their work, and their past 30 years.
Why did the WWF Nedbank Green Trust choose to support our ABI project?
The ABI project is a very exciting initiative as it takes cross-sectoral collaboration to the scale required to manage large landscapes and partnerships collectively. This is what is required for sustainable land management in South Africa going forward and the WWF Nedbank Green Trust funding has come at just the right time to take ABI to the next level.
What projects in general does the WWF Nedbank Green Trust seek to support?
The WWF Nedbank Green Trust funds innovative projects that have the potential to contribute to solving some of South Africa’s greatest societal and environmental challenges. We look for innovators creating catalytic change for the country and its people.
What does a better Overberg (and therefore also a better South Africa), look like to the WWF Nedbank Green Trust?
A better Overberg and a better South Africa is one where people and nature live in harmony. Where development and livelihoods creation happen in harmony with happy and healthy ecosystems. Where the ecosystem services provided by the earth are not exploited without thought to sustainability and renewal.
The WWF Nedbank Green Trust’s slogan, Igniting new ways for people and nature to thrive, has never been more relevant or imperative than it is in 2020.
Tell us a bit about your 30th anniversary year?
It is the year of the Trust’s 30th anniversary celebrations and the dawn of what many are hoping is humanity’s opportunity to reimagine how we live, how we use and consume, and the potential for our common futures. We have achieved our greatest influence through partnerships. We work with partners and communities who champion the custodianship of our natural resources and direct their energy and efforts to key levers of change for South Africa’s future. Our prosperity depends on the coming together of governments, businesses, organisations and all people, and so, for the past 30 years, the Green Trust has worked to create and cement these interconnected relationships. During this time, the WWF Nedbank Green Trust has raised more than R300 million for the funding of over 200 major conservation projects.
