The Agulhas Biodiversity Initiative was at the Cape Floral Kingdom Expo from 27-31 August 2015. ABI was represented by Gretha Louw – recipient of an ABI Small Grant. Gretha’s stand showcased the tools and equipment she uses as part of her environmental education for school children. Gretha used the small grant to buy laboratory equipement, including a microscope and a projector.
Gretha works closely with Grade 6 pupils around the Overberg district, including many rural schools in the area. She reaches around 1300 children per term. The Department of Agriculture’s LandCare is a partner in rolling out the environmental education programme.
The ABI Small Grant Programme is supported by the Table Mountain Fund, an associated trust of WWF-South Africa. The programme is providing funding support to community-based projects in the ABI area that have a conservation-related theme. Eight projects in the Overberg district have received support through the small grant facility to date. The final projects will be selected in the coming weeks.
